British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
