A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence close to the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

The three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and another man who fled following the explosion was found shortly later. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area showed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the property was subject to an court order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member triggered the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the access point and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to Italian media, noting that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
