The Evolution of a Cult can be defined by clear stages.

1. The Grand Vision

An inspiring figure or leaders introduce an innovative concept pledging a solution for alienated and vulnerable people.

Thus we find ourselves. They’re getting ready to storm the compound overseas. Pressure is mounting. Signs of trouble appear from the out-houses. One individual, vulnerable, nervous, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT written on his body as a statement, has emerged into view and is removed with discretion towards an inconclusive loan stint in county cricket.

Remember the beginning, when optimism reigned? The initial phase, of Bazball without brains.

2. Initial Adoration

Cult leaders offer a reboot, a brighter tomorrow, love, redemption among a group with shared faith in the big idea.

What was this thing initially? A team united enjoying success. Tattoos. Muscles. Determination. Confident masculinity. Admittedly, The squad will claim they don’t use the label, amusingly because if it doesn’t exist, what was that spectacle?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the player executing a stroke so unconventional it’s beyond belief. It’s the thrill of the captain in his final form, a look that says: focused titan, rugged appearance, natural look, genuinely raw you half-expect to look down and see him playing in the field bare-chested embracing nature.

It’s Ben Duckett still being allowed to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a cheerful animal in a waistcoat, expressing thoughts like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Certainly, the atmosphere, for quite a long time, was uplifting.

3. Expansion Period

Growth phase. Unity enforced via memorization of mantras. These principles may seem irrational as a test of “true belief”.

Am I alone? The reaction, the anger, the disappointment following the initial loss seems too strong, too much. The performance was poor during the match, as is typical there. They were dominated in the field during a brief period as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, outplayed by the batsman playing aggressively but smarter, responsive to the situation, a man playing with aura.

And now we have this the attacks, the anger, the sense of English Test cricket as a kind of abomination. The consensus is that losing isn’t enough, they should be dismantled, to be cleansed, obliterated, overwhelmed through sheer skill of the pace attack, the conventional tactics of the bowler, seen enjoying his wickets humbly similar to getting a rewarding prize. What impact will this have?

4. External Conflict

Issues emerge due to setbacks. However, faults are ignored. It turns to anger towards critics.

Ultimately, half a week out the upcoming game, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the story of this movement. England could quite easily win in the next Test with bold tactics. More likely, they could lose just as quickly. And if they do lose it feels like we may see the decline.

Prior to that, a couple of points to note about this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. People were very angry, which proved the point because everyone knows how to confirm lack of cult status is when its acolytes react defensively rejecting criticism of the philosophy.

What has happened lately are fascinating. Opposition to the style is now the trend. Social media is furious, angry English pundits, shots of angry middle-aged travelling fans cheated out of three days of cricket, reminiscent of investors demanding recourse.

Meanwhile, we have the wider backdrop of the opponent’s mixed ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, stating, the methods you value and have developed to distinguish yourselves from the opposition, it’s not serious after all.

Here lies the truth. It’s all cults. The style was a trend since the sport itself is insular. In fact, the sport in England is closed, a circle, a private event, a restricted environment with two hundred years of ceremonial past defining it. Historically, this was where entry is limited. It’s the colonial game of the British, the early image-makers. And surprisingly, the country is a phenomenon, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a royal family remains.

England’s cricketers have been sealed up in this environment from a young age. Attempting to break free, to build a better atmosphere, they are mirroring their upbringing, building another enclosure, a closed circle, however with 15 cool guys and a coach promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.

Focus on the moment. Embrace challenges. Despite efforts, things stay similar.

With this mind, it is perhaps the moment to show understanding for the movement, to acknowledge its merits, which are significant. What is Bazball? Creating a sense of freedom. Questioning traditions. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
