During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
